During the summer months, costumed interpreters bring these activities to life, making for an interactive and educational experience. The Danish Jewish Museum houses a small but impressive array of artifacts that offer insights into the life and experiences of Jews in Denmark. Exhibits cover a wide range of themes, including religious practices, family life, trade, and migration. Situated in the vibrant district of Nørrebro in Copenhagen, the Workers Museum (Arbejdermuseet) offers an intriguing and essential perspective on Denmark’s social history. The museum is housed in the Workers’ Assembly Building (Arbejdernes Forsamlingsbygning), a historic venue that has served as a hub for the Danish labor movement since the late 19th century.

LACMA is instead developing a “strategic plan of regional partnerships” with museums — large and small — in order to pull more of its collection out of storage, and make it accessible to as many people as possible. The sole compensation for the CRA’s stupidity is this jewel-like cluster of geometric forms, clad in rough-textured red sandstone, hunkered down amid the office towers. Major art and architecture exhibitions are presented in skylit galleries leading off the sunken court. Japanese architect Arata Isozaki created a contrast to the extreme heights of the Bunker Hill glass-and-steel high rise towers by designing MOCA as a sunken, red sandstone-clad space. The entrance is marked by an arch leading to a subterranean terraced courtyard.

The Danish famously love porcelain and lights but when it gets to chairs, design becomes an obsession. A special section in the museum thus deals with the Danish Chair and the interplay with international chair designs.

A modern and active place

The Designmuseum Danmark, Bredgade 68, 1260 København K, is in a former mid-18th century King Frederik Hospital in central Copenhagen. Admission to the café, bookshop, library, and pleasant courtyard garden is free. The café is a popular lunch stop for small meals while three-course dinners are served on Wednesdays.

The winding spiral staircase that leads to a walkway high above the ground, offering a unique perspective of the tropical canopy, is a popular Copenhagen Instagram location. The Danish War Museum exceeded my expectations and I’ll go out on a limb and say this is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Jason with the Golden Fleece is considered to be the artist’s first great masterpiece and remains for me the highlight of the museum. Wearing only his warrior’s helmet, the marble statue shows Jason’s proud nonchalance as he sets off to return home with the Golden Fleece on his left arm.

Today this location hosts the museum’s main galleries, the flagship location of the MOCA Store, and the staff offices. The Design Museum showcases everything from architecture and products to graphics and fashion. Tucked behind the sprawling Statens Museum for Kunst, in pretty Østre Anlæg park, this comparatively bijou museum houses 19th- and early 20th-century Danish masterpieces that belonged to tobacco magnate Heinrich Hirschsprung. The collection includes major works by artists from the Danish Golden Age (1800–1850) and paintings by Anna Ancher, a member of the Skagen Painters colony and considered one of Denmark’s greatest artists.

However you choose to spend your time, it’s best to start a designed-themed tour of Copenhagen by visiting the museums, which will give context to what you see around the city. In this exhibition, visitors will encounter a 13-metre glass slab lit from within, designed by the acclaimed designer Boris Berlin. Resembling a golden, glowing worm in the darkened room, it tells the story of the history of mealtime design with seven settings of tableware from the Renaissance until today. The interiors were determined by the dimensions of a sickbed and based on what was, at the time, a modern, systematic and functional hospital set-up. It created unobstructed access to each bed, windows to provide natural light, and good care.

The ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art in Ishøj, Denmark, is proud to present Anish Kapoor — Unseen, the largest ever exhibition of the artist’s works in Scandinavia. Kapoor has been a leading figure in contemporary art for over four decades, and has exhibited at the world’s most prestigious institutions.

The museum chose to close down in 2020 and start the major renovation and redevelopment that has secured the museum’s unique historic building framework for the future. In a comprehensive reorganization of all exhibition and audience areas and rethinking of the guest experience, we embarked on a major restoration project that has saved the underground under our historic museum building.
